Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
An acupuncturist uses hair-thin needles to stimulate certain points on
or near the surface of the body (called acupoints). These points are
generally located on our body’s energy channels, or
meridians. They may also be found on special localized areas such
as the hands, ears, or areas of pain. The stimulation of these points
has been shown to influence the physiological functioning of the body.
By selecting the proper points, we can strengthen what is weak, reduce
what is in excess, open the flow of energy that is blocked, and bring
the body back into balance.
How Does it Work?
Our health is maintained when our bodies are in balance, or
homeostasis. When that balance is disrupted by pathogens, environmental
factors (pollution, allergens, dampness, etc.), or internal factors
such as stress, improper diet, etc. disharmony or disease is the
result. By stimulating acupoints an acupuncturist can restore the
normal flow of qi (“chee”) create balance, and stimulate
our body’s own natural healing ability.
Does it Hurt?
Acupuncture is generally painless. You may feel a slight pinch, a dull
or heavy sensation, or achiness at the area of insertion. This feeling
generally dissipates within a few minutes. After a treatment, people
generally feel relaxed and refreshed.
